A wide cage (at least 18 inches long) is better than a tall one, so they can fly side to side.

Unlike parrots, finches do not climb but fly from side to side, making width the most important factor in cage selection. A narrow, tall cage is not suitable as finches need ample horizontal space to fly freely. A cage at least 30 inches wide is ideal for better exercise and mental well-being.
